Black Friday

Black Friday is the Friday after American Thanksgiving and marks the official start
of the holiday shopping season. The term was coined in Philadelphia in the 1960s and today it's the biggest e-commerce event of the year worldwide.

The term Black Friday originated in the United States and was first used in the 1960s. The expression was coined in Philadelphia to describe the heavy road traffic that built up on the Friday after Thanksgiving, marking the start of the Christmas holiday season.

But why is it called Black Friday? Black was the colour used by merchants to record cash income, which from that special Friday each year began to rise all the way through to Christmas Day.

There are also alternative theories about the origins of Black Friday. A lesser-known one links it to Black Tuesday in 1929, when the Wall Street crash marked the beginning of a dramatic financial crisis. It is said that in the 1960s, merchants offered discounts so steep they risked a symbolic "loss", much like what happened on the stock market in '29!

Others link Black Friday to the post-war period, when the American economy was beginning to recover and retailers launched discounts to encourage consumers to spend. This boost to consumption became a tradition right around the Thanksgiving period.
